A Word From the (new) KLA Moderator

25+ years and hundreds of alumni later, KLA is stronger than ever thanks to the leadership of Steve Grill, Jean Northenor, and the executive board members who have served so ably with them. As the new moderator, I’m thrilled (and humbled) to take up the reins as Steve moves to the advisor role and Jean continues on in an emeritus advisor status. As a 1991 KLA graduate and Training Director at Lake City Bank, I have been glad to host KLA’s kickoff session and the closing Project Proud session for the last ten years at “Lake City University” in downtown Warsaw.

While change can be good, don’t worry – the great programs and traditions will continue in 2008-9. We have another stellar year of sessions lined up with some of the best and brightest presenters our county has to offer. We have scheduled a new leadership workshop on January 6th. Steve Carlson, the Career Services Director at Grace College will help us learn how to “Lead From Our Strengths”.

The KLA class will also participate again in the Education Summit in November. This event is sponsored by the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce’s Education Steering Committee, of which I am also a member. As moderator for this event, I’m confident that class members will enjoy a closer look at local education initiatives that help develop our growing work force. This year’s emphasis is on meeting the educational needs of ethnically and culturally diverse students.

As a student transplant to the Warsaw-Winona Lake area in 1983, I soon began to understand why so many Grace College graduates decided to stay and build families and careers here. The opportunities for a high quality of life abound and KLA has played an important role in improving this community through civic awareness, social networks among alumni, and most importantly through the many white paper projects that have come to life around us and improved our schools, neighborhoods, organizations, and recreational areas.

My wife and daughters and I are proud to call Kosciusko County our home.  As I think about the next 25 years of life in our county, I’m confident that our growth and prosperity will continue as long as we stay committed to building strong community leaders.  Here’s to another great year of learning and serving together through Kosciusko Leadership Academy.
